Water Damage Restoration

Common Water Damage Causes

Broken pipes can be a common cause of water damage, causing water to come flooding into your living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens and more. Dealing with a broken water pipe is not an everyday occurrence and there are many different reasons why your water pipe may be leaking, as well as what to do to repair the pipe. The most common culprit for a broken pipe is freezing temperatures. Homes that are poorly insulated or that are left vacant with no regulating heat can be the cause of frozen water pipes and frozen water lines in the winter time. These breaks are often not noticed immediately because they occur in the basement where the heat is not as well-regulated or when people are away and their HVAC is not properly regulated. A frozen, broken or leaky pipe is an inconvenience that can lead to major repairs for your home. Ignoring these repairs can be extremely costly as water damage can lead to an unstable structure and damage of your valuables. If you have experienced or are experiencing a burst or frozen pipe or any other flooding, give us a call as soon as possible to prevent or minimize secondary damages.

I have mold on my cheese, so why do I care if I have mold on my walls?

Mold is a generic name for over 200,000 kinds of microbial growth. Some are good, some are bad, and none should be growing in your home. It takes three factors to make mold: organic material, heat and moisture. If you remove one of these factors, mold will not grow. If consistent moisture and oxygen is present, mold can grow on virtually anything. Modern building materials such as ceiling tile, carpet, particle board, sheetrock and wallpaper are like candy to mold.

Mold actually eats and digests the host product, damaging furnishings and eventually causing structural damage to building materials. Molds reproduce by releasing spores; regenerative cells with a tough coating that can survive detergents, chemicals, and extreme temperatures. These spores are dangerous when highly concentrated in an indoor area and especially dangerous when inhaled by humans and animals.

Some molds produce chemicals called aflatoxins which are extremely toxic and carcinogenic. Mold can cause a variety of health problems; from allergies and asthma, to blindness, emphysema and cancer. Children and elderly are especially sensitive to poor indoor air quality and a high indoor spore count. You can prevent damage to buildings and buildings’ contents, save money, and avoid potential health problems by controlling moisture and eliminating fungal growth. Whether it’s from leaky pipes, improper building practices, poor building maintenance, or Mother Nature, mold happens. If you see evidence of mold, or have a concern about your home or business, give Resto Clean a call and let your Certified Specialists do an evaluation.

Can’t I just use bleach? Why do I need to bring in professionals?

Bleach adds moisture which may help the mold grow and is toxic itself. Improper rubbing and removal of large mold infestations can disturb the mold and release excess spores and toxic chemicals into the air. Biocides are chemicals that can kill living molds, but biocides are poisonous and, if used incorrectly, can be more harmful than the original mold. When material with spores is removed it can cause the mold to aerosolizes and spread throughout your home and not just only in the areas where you can see the mold. It can cause a number of respiratory irritations, colds, and it breaks down our immune system.
